Stuart Pearce Interview: James Milner is the ultimate professional

New Liverpool recruit James Milner has received glowing praise from England legend Stuart Pearce in an exclusive interview for

Perhaps the admiration is unsurprising considering both players are bywords for English grit and honest endeavour but reflecting on a player who could easily be his spiritual offspring Pearce is almost gushing towards the midfield dynamo. Except that, well, psychos don’t generally gush.

“Milly is the ultimate professional and one of the best I’ve ever worked with. He has always turned up for England whether he’s selected or not and he has maximised the ability he’s been blessed with. That’s the one commodity you ask of any player. That should be the base line. Whatever your ability is maximise it.”

Pearce speaks from first-hand experience having coached Milner at England under 21 level and with the young lions preparing for this week’s Euro Championships he speaks candidly on their chances while looking back on his six years in charge.

Stuart Pearce exclusive: Liverpool fans need to stop the snobbery over Ings

In an exclusive interview with England legend Stuart Pearce has responded to the mixed reception that has greeted the arrival of Danny Ings to Anfield. While many Reds view the signing of Burnley’s hitman as being sensible given his 11 goals in a fantastic debut Premier League campaign the club’s fanbase are hardly doing cartwheels, an apathy due in part to Ings’ supposed ‘unglamorous’ route to the club. Yet Pearce – who famously began his career at Wealdstone before a leap up the divisions to Coventry – says Ings deserves his shot at the top.

“We all have different career paths. I came through from the non-league system so if you’re going to be snobby about it I’d have never kicked a ball in the top flight.

The bottom line is he’s obviously a big talent and is a decent player to add to the squad”.

The 78 cap England international and former Under 21 coach was speaking ahead of this week’s Under 21 Euro Championships where he tips Ings to be a pivotal figure,  previews England’s chances, and looks back on his six years in charge.
